Drawing from PTB´s experience in supporting the setting up of National Accreditation Focal Points worldwide, this paper presents main types and characteristics of this concept. Besides, it illustrates practical implementation steps and lessons learned gained from the technical cooperation of PTB. The document aims to assist political decision makers and institutions of the national Quality Infrastructure in their endeavour to build up accreditation capacities in their country using National Accreditation Focal Points.

The paper describes requirements and recommendations for the development, organization, and operation of a national metrology system. Steps towards a national metrology policy are presented. The document proposes measures to ensure that a metrology system is adequate for the economy and society of a given country. It addresses decision and policymakers with limited knowledge of metrology on the one hand, and metrologists working in metrology institutions in an early development stage. It may also be useful for third parties (donors) and their implementing agencies.

The manual indicates best practices for chemical waste management. Based on general and specific procedures as well as examples, it outlines the possibilities available to a chemist or person in charge of a chemical laboratory regarding the selection of chemicals and their pre-treatment to ensure that no hazardous substances will be released into the environment. The paper is primarily intended to help responsible parties identify the most practical and application-oriented solutions for the disposal of chemical waste in developing countries.

The guide aims to assist metrologists in increasing the accuracy and reliability of mass measurements. It provides detailed recommendations regarding weights used, required laboratory conditions, equipment, and calibration parameters.

The paper presents a short overview of the effects of PTB´s Quality Infrastructure projects on the socio-economic conditions as well as on public institutions and processes in countries and regions with high levels of instability or current conflicts. Despite its technical design, the promotion of Quality Infrastructure in the partner countries can have an indirect influence on the stability of these regions by contributing to a structural form of conflict prevention.
